Hotel nostos. Humble, nimble, dreamlike tumble

My father was born a seaman, he sailed the seven seas for more than forty years. When I was little he used to take me with him on his big ship. A long trip on the sea transforms you. Exiting the clear Mediterranean waters from the busy Strait of Gibraltar, entering the deep Atlantic Ocean and traveling north towards the Arctic encountering whales and glistening icebergs and filling a child’s mind with images of nature at its wildest. A winter’s night on a merchant navy ship in the middle of the ocean is made of the darkest-dark velvet, covering everything in deep silence.

Mio padre è nato marinaio, ha navigato i sette mari per più di quarant’anni. Quando ero piccola mi portava con lui nella sua grande nave. Un lungo viaggio in mare ti trasforma. Uscire dalle trasparenti acque del Mediterraneo attraverso il trafficato Stretto di Gibilterra, per entrare nel profondo dell’Oceano Atlantico e viaggiare in direzione nord, verso l’Artico, incontrare balene e iceberg scintillanti, riempie la mente di un bambino con immagini della natura più selvaggia. La notte invernale, su una nave della marina mercantile in mezzo all’oceano, è scura come il più scuro velluto, copre tutto, con un silenzio profondo.
