Quayola is one of the artists selected for the third edition of the Noor Riyadh, the Largest Light Art Festival in the World which runs from November 30th to December 16th, 2023 in Riyadh. Curated by an illustrious team of experts, this festival showcases expansive light-based artworks, from ephemeral sculptures and urban projections to immersive site-specific installations. Quayola presents “Jardins d’Été” an artwork that pays homage to French Impressionism, especially the late works of Claude Monet. In this project the artist recreates conditions similar to what would have been observed by the French Impressionist landscape painters to achieve new modes of visual representation thanks to the use of ultra-high-definition cameras and custom computer softwares. The result is that natural landscapes are seen through the “eye” of a machine that serves as a counterpoint to the subjective human optical organ. While the art historical term “Impressionism” refers to the evocative quality of loosely painting a scene undergoing environmental changes, here Quayola engages with an extensive technological apparatus to precisely capture subtle nuances beyond human perception.

Quayola è uno degli artisti selezionati per la terza edizione del Noor Riyadh, il più grande festival di Light Art del mondo che si svolge dal 30 novembre al 16 dicembre 2023 a Riyadh. Curato da un illustre team di esperti, il festival espone opere d’arte incentrate sulla luce, tra cui sculture effimere, proiezioni urbane e installazioni immersive site-specific. Quayola presenta “Jardins d’Été”, un’opera d’arte che rende omaggio all’impressionismo francese e in particolare alle ultime opere di Claude Monet. In questo progetto l’artista ricrea condizioni simili a quelle che sarebbero state osservate dai paesaggisti impressionisti francesi per ottenere nuove modalità di rappresentazione visiva, grazie all’uso di fotocamere ad altissima definizione e software informatici personalizzati. Il risultato è che i paesaggi naturali vengono visti attraverso “l’occhio” di una macchina che fa da contrappunto all’organo ottico umano soggettivo. Mentre il termine storico-artistico “Impressionismo” si riferisce alla qualità evocativa di dipingere liberamente una scena che subisce cambiamenti ambientali, qui Quayola si impegna con un ampio apparato tecnologico per catturare con precisione sottili sfumature che vanno oltre la percezione umana.
