The Centro Americano Colombo, the Paul Bardwell Gallery in Medellin and the Italian Cultural Institute in Bogotá promote and host the residency of Opiemme, an artistic collective founded in Turin in 1998, which unites the world of visual art with literature. Opiemme’s works move within the universe of visual poetry, combined with Street Poetry actions that aim to bring poetry closer to people. The residency is entitled “Icaros”, a reference to the medicinal songs performed in South American ceremonies (‘ikaro’ derives from the Quechua verb ikaray = ‘to blow smoke in order to heal’), and to the myth of ancient Greece, metaphors of that ‘feverish and unassailable spirit’, that ‘globalist fundamentalism’ (which), ‘with its single thought, sets in motion a machine that crushes and annihilates everything’ (Zanzotto, In questo progresso scorsoio, 2009). The project is inspired by the poetic work and thought of the Italian poet Andrea Zanzotto, one of the most important Italian poets of the 20th century. Since the 1950s, Zanzotto has shown a sensitivity towards the landscape and reflected on a climate catastrophe already in progress, which he described as ‘the delirium over which a veil of dissimulation must be drawn’.
