The Meccaniche della Meraviglia Association presents the third exhibition stage of “Una Generazione di Mezzo” – a multi-year project dedicated to contemporary Brescian art – with the exhibition “Spellbound” dedicated to Brescian artists Maurizio Donzelli (1958) and Paola Pezzi (1963). A double solo show with two curators, Alberto Fiz from Turin for Donzelli and Marco Tonelli from Rome for Pezzi, articulated in the spaces of Palazzo Martinengo Cesaresco in Brescia.
“Spellbound”, “enchanted”, “bewitched”: with this term, used by Alfred Hitchcock in the 1945 film of the same name, an allusion is made to the psycho-emotional states of the two protagonists, whose first meeting is an obvious stroke of lightning for both of them, constructed filmically in a very “magical” and romantic sequence of fields/counter-fields. With this term, in the exhibition project that sees Maurizio Donzelli and Paola Pezzi in dialogue in summer 2023, we thus want to allude both to that enchantment that the relative has towards the work and to the meeting between two artists who have tried to let themselves be mutually enchanted by their respective visual investigations. A sequence of works that are also embedded and mirrored by merging into the path in the exhibition, calling the audience to an intense visual immersion and seducing their gaze.
For the exhibition, the artist presents various cycles of works: the “Drawings”, “Arazzi” “Mirror”, “O”, “Notturni”, “Girandole”, and “Lux Drawing.” An overview of his entire poetics, intended to constitute a true anthology. Donzelli questions the beginning of the iconic process and the modalities of the gaze, going to seek in the ornamental the embroideries and filaments of our stratified cultural and philosophical geography.
The graphic project in the exhibition, developed by the third-year students of the School of Graphics at the Accademia di Belle Arti SantaGiulia in Brescia, coordinated by Francesca Rosina and Massimo Tantardini, also synthesizes the curatorial concept and artistic dialogue.

L’Associazione Meccaniche della Meraviglia presenta la terza tappa espositiva di “Una Generazione di Mezzo” – progetto pluriennale dedicato all’arte contemporanea bresciana – con l’esposizione “Spellbound” dedicata agli artisti bresciani Maurizio Donzelli (1958) e Paola Pezzi (1963). Una doppia personale con due curatori, il torinese Alberto Fiz per Donzelli e il romano Marco Tonelli per Pezzi, articolata negli spazi del Palazzo Martinengo Cesaresco a Brescia.
“Spellbound”, “incantato”, “ammaliato”: con questo termine, utilizzato da Alfred Hitchcock nel film omonimo del 1945 – in italiano fu chiamato “Io ti salverò” – si fa allusione agli stati psico-emotivi dei due protagonisti, il cui primo incontro è un evidente colpo di fulmine per entrambi, costruito filmicamente in una sequenza di campi/controcampi molto “magica” e romantica. Con questo termine, nel progetto espositivo che vede in dialogo Maurizio Donzelli e Paola Pezzi nell’estate 2023, si vuole così alludere sia a quell’incantamento che il riguardante ha nei confronti dell’opera sia all’incontro tra due artisti che hanno provato a lasciarsi incantare vicendevolmente dalle loro rispettive indagini visuali. Una sequenza di opere che si incastonano e rispecchiano anche fondendosi nel percorso in mostra, chiamando il pubblico a un’immersione visiva intensa e seducendone lo sguardo.
Per la mostra l’artista presenta vari cicli di lavori: i “Drawings”, gli “Arazzi”, i “Mirror”, gli “O”, i “Notturni”, le “Girandole” e i “Lux Drawing”. Una panoramica di tutta la sua poetica, volta a costituire una vera e propria antologica. Donzelli si interroga sull’inizio del processo iconico e sulle modalità dello sguardo, andando a cercare nell’ornamentale i ricami e i filamenti della nostra stratificata geografia culturale e filosofica.
Anche il progetto grafico in mostra, elaborato dagli studenti del terzo anno della scuola di Grafica dell’Accademia di Belle Arti SantaGiulia di Brescia, coordinati da Francesca Rosina e Massimo Tantardini, sintetizza il concetto curatoriale e il dialogo artistico.
