A 3-channel video installation will be presented as part of the exhibition Tales of Nostalgia curated by Marnie Benney and Alia Ahmad Alsaud in the spaces of Misk Art Institute, opening on October 2 and on view for three full months, until January 15.
“Tales of Nostalgia” is both a reflection upon and a conversation about where we are, as a species, in our endless, intertwined relationship with time and technology. Presenting the works of twelve international artists, the show will explore notions of time, memory and nostalgia through the use of digital technologies.
Artificial Botany is an ongoing project which explores the latent expressive capacity of botanical illustrations through the use of machine learning algorithms. Before the invention of photography, botanical illustration was the only way to visually record the many species of plants. These images were used by physicists, pharmacists, and botanical scientists for identification, analysis, and classification.
While these works are no longer scientifically relevant today, they have become an inspiration for artists who pay homage to life and nature using contemporary tools and methodologies. Artificial Botany draws from public domain archive images of illustrations by the greatest artists of the genre, including Maria Sibylla Merian, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Anne Pratt, Mariann North, and Ernst Haeckel.

Un’installazione video a 3 canali verrà presentata nell’ambito della mostra Tales of Nostalgia, curata da Marnie Benney e Alia Ahmad Alsaud, negli spazi del Misk Art Institute, che aprirà il 2 ottobre e sarà visitabile per tre mesi fino al 15 gennaio.
“Tales of Nostalgia” è sia una riflessione che una conversazione su come e dove siamo come specie, nella nostra infinita e intrecciata relazione con il tempo e la tecnologia. Presentando le opere di dodici artisti internazionali, la mostra esplorerà le nozioni di tempo, memoria e nostalgia attraverso l’uso delle tecnologie digitali.
Artificial Botany è un progetto che esplora le potenzialità espressive delle illustrazioni botaniche attraverso l’utilizzo di algoritmi di machine learning. Prima dell’invenzione della fotografia, le illustrazioni botaniche erano l’unico modo per archiviare visivamente le molteplici specie di piante esistenti al mondo. Queste immagini sono state usate da fisici, farmacisti e scienziati botanici per l’identificazione, l’analisi e la classificazione delle specie. Sebbene non siano più scientificamente rilevanti, sono comunque diventate fonte d’ispirazione per artisti che rendono omaggio alla vita e alla natura usando strumenti e metodologie contemporanee. Artificial Botany è un’opera creata con questo spirito attingendo da archivi di pubblico dominio contenenti illustrazioni dei più grandi artisti del genere, tra cui Maria Sibylla Merian, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Anne Pratt, Mariann North ed Ernst Haeckel.
