W.W.W. – What Walls Want

For the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, Marignana Arte will be opening a new exhibition curated by Ilaria Bignotti.
On this particular occasion, the theme is strongly aligned with both the identity of the gallery and the curatorial orientation of Ilaria Bignotti. Ilaria is a researcher in the spatialism and ambiental languages between the sixties and seventies and also in contemporary exploration, with reference to the themes of the processuality, of the resilience and of the site-specific.
These themes of the project are reflected from the title that is a play on words on two tracks: on one side, if the reader takes the words’ initials w.w.w. they are sent directly online, to the net, to the digital world that celebrates the potential of the collective involvement used in the artwork and the immersive experience.
On the other side, reading the title in its extension, the title of the exhibition asks us, and foremost the artist, “what do walls want”: or rather, how the works of art fit in with the space, intended as how the surfaces welcome the image, how the osmotic walls of a metaphysical vision, and also like a osmotic membrane, activating the exchange between artwork, artist and spectator.

In occasione della Biennale di Venezia di Architettura, Marignana Arte apre una nuova mostra a cura di Ilaria Bignotti.
In questo caso specifico, il tema si allinea fortemente sia all’identità della Galleria sia alla direzione curatoriale di Ilaria Bignotti, studiosa nell’ambito dei linguaggi spazialisti e ambientali tra anni ‘60 e ‘70 e parimenti nelle indagini contemporanee, con riferimento ai temi della processualità, della resilienza e del site-specific.
Il progetto risente di queste direzioni sin dal titolo che gioca su un doppio binario: da un lato, se letto nelle sue iniziali, www, rimanda immediatamente proprio alla rete, al web, al mondo digitale che esalta le potenzialità dell’opera quale medium di coinvolgimento collettivo e di esperienza immersiva.
Dall’altro, leggendolo nella sua estensione, il titolo della mostra ci chiede, e chiede in primo luogo all’artista, “cosa vogliano i muri”: ovvero, come le opere si relazionino con lo spazio, inteso sia come superficie accogliente l’immagine, sia come parete osmotica di una visione meta-fisica, sia infine come membrana osmotica, attivante lo scambio tra opera, artista e spettatore.
